pyrography or woodcarving
in the Woods

Be inspired by nature and create your own Wood Carving to be proud of!

Birtley Woodland Art Space is nestled within the woodland beyond the lake on the Birtley Estate in Bramley, a beautiful Surrey Hills location, so picturesque with its lakes and gardens and woodland walks and not surprisingly it is classified as an "AONB" an area of outstanding natural beauty!

Wood Carving

Ruth has over twenty years of Wood Carving and Pyrography experience and will guide you step by step to create a 2d Relief Carving on a solid piece of Local Wood using traditional gouges and mallets or a design drawn and burnt into the wood.

The workshop will take place in an outdoor studio space set on the grounds of the 48 acres Birtley Estate.

Be inspired by Ruth's carved and pyrographed pieces and the surrounding landscape or bring a sketch or your own design.

Ruth will guide you through the stages and traditional techniques used to create an art piece or a sign. You will learn how to finish off and protect your work for both indoor and outdoor displays.

We have multiple dates for this workshop available throughout the year, perfect for those who wish to return and add more detail to the carving or would like to work on a more ambitious piece that may take more than one day to complete!

You will leave this workshop with knowledge and confidence in the techniques and tools used to be able to continue carving at home if desired.

Pyrography

You can choose to do my Pyrography in the Woods or combine both Woodcarving and Pyrography into your piece of art.

Please choose which option you would like to do.

Spoon Carving (2nd July)

Join experienced Makers and Teachers Ruth Wheeler and George Chapman for a weekend of CARVING

and Whittling Spoons and Relief Carving in a Woodland setting.

The spoon & relief carving workshops are held in lovely wooded locations, usually sat around a fire with like-minded souls, drinking tea and chatting away. A medium level of physical strength is helpful, as everything is made using traditional hand tools, adze, axes, drawknife, heavy mallet etc, We will be there to help and assist and Ruth will be assisting and teach anyone that wants to embellish their spoons or carve a 2 d piece over the weekend.

You will leave with your own handmade spoon or carving, a smile on your face, the smell of woodsmoke on your clothes, and in my experience new friends, win-win.

You will learn different carving techniques and which tools you need for each process and you will come away confident to go home and make your own.
